Supposed to wear one contact lens?

I went for my yearly exam today, and my eye doctor told me my vision had improved and I now only needed to wear my contacts in one eye. I believe him, but how many people have heard of that? I also got new gles that only have a prescription in one side. It happened to my dad, but I figured it's a hereditary thing. Am I weird, or is this more common than I think?
