What does dominance refer to and how does one infer whether dominance exists for two alleles?

Dominance is the gene which dominates over the other- for example, when breeding two plants, one pink and one white, whichever one the offspring is is the dominant allele. So if it was pink, the dominant allele would be the pink gene. Basically whichever one shows up is the dominant one.
