Why do so many Americans despise individual freedoms and liberties in favor of supposed stability and order?

So many Americans seem to believe that government is the solution that can bring both stability and order by replacing individual freedoms and liberates, thus becoming a nanny state. Why have Americans given up both individual freedoms and liberities, which made the place great in the first place in favor of government paternalism?
